Dr. Bauchner is Editor in Chief of JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association) and the JAMA network. Before taking that position in 2011, he was a professor of pediatrics and public health at Boston University School of Medicine, and directed the BUSM Division that houses CHEER and CHAMPS.
We have many reasons to celebrate Dr. Bauchner’s achievements; most recently we applaud his consistent and courageous stance on promoting an evidence-based response to the COVID epidemic. His Conversations with Dr. Fauci are among the most compelling and insightful commentaries on COVID in this era.
Dr. Bauchner leads the field in his quest to make science accessible to the reader. He cuts through the jargon and complexities and insists that academics present their work in clear, comprehensible terms. The “visual abstracts” in JAMA publications are key examples of this approach.
His visionary style obviously works. One of his first moves at JAMA was to rename and rebrand all 9 specialty publications in the JAMA group as JAMA journals. JAMA’s followers on social media have increased from 13,000 to approximately 900,000 since 2011; article views increased from 10 million to 34 million, and podcast downloads increased from 300,000 in 2014 to 3.3 million in 2019.
In CHEER’s early days as the Breastfeeding Center at Boston Medical Center, Howard was our constant supporter. Without his mentorship and leadership, we would not be what we are today. We continue to push for clarity of communication and purpose, and reliance on the evidence. Our internal motto is still, “That’s what Howard would have told us to do.”
Thank you Dr. Bauchner for your service, your brilliance and your charismatic leadership.
CHEER Champion of the week
Each Monday (besides public holidays), we will recognize a CHEER Champion for all the support they have provided for CHEER, CHAMPS, or the general public.
