Our goals at CHAMPS (Communities and Hospitals Advancing Maternity Practices) are to promote best practices in maternity care, increase breastfeeding rates, decrease racial and ethnic disparities, and support hospitals to adopt the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and gain Baby-Friendly designation. We aim to do this with full integration into the community and in partnership with community organizations in the areas where we work.
CHAMPS South (2014-17) was supported by a $2.125 million grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, and operated in Mississippi, New Orleans, Texas, and Southern Tennessee.
(AI/AN) CHAMPS (2015-18) was also supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, to work with tribal and Alaska Native hospitals across the US and in Alaska. AI/AN CHAMPS also collaborated with many individual tribes on Native centered breastfeeding education.
Mississippi CHAMPS (2018-21) is funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and the Bower Foundation, and is working with around 90% of the birthing hospitals in Mississippi on Baby-Friendly designation.
CHAMPS Greece is a new departure for CHEER into international maternal child health and breastfeeding support, and has begun work on breastfeeding support for refugees in Greece, as well as with the Greek Baby-Friendly organization.
