Breastfeeding in the Workplace

Your COVID-19 Workplace Rights: Breastfeeding and Lactation
To ensure that as many employees as possible have information about their workplace rights as well as practical solutions to make breastfeeding work during the pandemic and beyond, CHEER has partnered with the USBC affiliated Workplace Support Constellation and Center for WorkLife Law to develop a cobranded version of their “Your COVID-19 Workplace Rights: Breastfeeding and Lactation” document.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has produced a large array of resources to help employers providing worksite accommodations to nursing women at work. Basic accommodations of private space and time to express milk at work are not only required by law in the Fair Labor Standards Act, they have also been found to result in bottom-line benefits to the company through lower health care costs, lower absenteeism rates, and higher retention after employees leave to have their babies. The following free resources provide a multitude of solutions for every type of work setting.

The Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan created a Toolkit in 2013.  The toolkit was created to...
"(1) Increase understanding of the benefits of workplace policies and practices that support breastfeeding. (2) Create and distribute a breastfeeding support toolkit to all Tribes with the hopes that each Tribe will adopt their own policy."

Supporting Nursing Moms at Work: Employer Solutions
This online resource provides businesses with cost-effective tips and solutions for any industry setting.

Breastfeeding and Going Back to Work
Planning ahead for your return to work can help ease the transition. Learn as much as you can before the baby's birth, and talk with your employer about your options. Planning ahead can help you continue to enjoy breastfeeding your baby long after your maternity leave is over.

What the law says about breastfeeding and work
The federal Break Time for Nursing Mothers law requires employers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to provide basic accommodations for breastfeeding mothers at work. These accommodations include time for women to express milk and a private space that is not a bathroom each time they need to pump. Learn more about what is required of employers and what employees need to know.
